March

The March sun melts the snow very quickly. In higher regions the snow is now at its best, but in Gimmelwald spring is slowly coming. Its arrival is announced by the crocus and liverwort. When the last of the snow has melted hundreds of thrushes can suddenly be seen looking for worms. The ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) and fielfare (Turdus pilaris) are particularly common here. The end of March brings the first wheatear( Oenanthe oenanthe). A few weeks later all these birds can only be seen high above the village. If you want to go skiing in March you must protect yourself well against the sun.
